Most executives have some version of an online profile. A LinkedIn page, a company bio, maybe a speaker profile from a conference two years ago. The difference between a professional profile and a functional author page is not cosmetic. It is architectural. A profile is designed to be read by humans. The repetition is intentional. It reinforces the name-to-topic association that AI engines use to build citation patterns.
The third element is a defined expertise section. This is a short, structured statement of the specific topics you publish on and the specific audience you serve. It is not a list of skills. It is a declaration of topical authority that crawlers can read as a clear signal.
The fourth element is a curated publishing archive. Links to your published work, organized by topic or date, with each link carrying the title of the piece and the publication it appeared in. This is the indexed record that AI engines use to verify that your claimed expertise is backed by actual published content.
The fifth element is external publication links. Links to your bylined work on external domains, including major publications, industry outlets, and any platforms where your work appears under your name. The sixth element is contact and social links. These should include your LinkedIn profile, any other active publishing platforms, and a contact method. Understanding Person Schema and Why It Matters
Schema markup is a standardized vocabulary that webmasters use to describe the content on a page in terms that search engines and AI crawlers can interpret without ambiguity. For executive author pages, the most important schema type is Person schema.
A Person schema declaration tells crawlers your full name, your job title, your employer, your area of expertise, and the URLs of your social and professional profiles. It creates an explicit, machine-readable identity record that connects your name to a set of structured attributes.
Without Person schema, a crawler reading your author page has to infer these relationships from the text. It might get them right. It might not. With Person schema, the relationships are declared. The crawler reads a structured record rather than making probabilistic inferences from unstructured text.
The sameAs property within Person schema is particularly valuable for AEO. It allows you to declare that the person described on this page is the same person who appears at a list of other URLs, your LinkedIn profile, your Twitter or X profile, your Wikipedia page if one exists, your Wikidata entry, and your profiles on major publications. Article Schema and Authorship Attribution
Person schema establishes your identity. Article schema connects your published content to that identity.
Every article you publish on your owned domain should carry Article schema that includes an author field pointing to your Person schema record. The authorship is declared in the structured data.
This matters for AEO because citation confidence is higher when authorship is structurally declared than when it is inferred from the byline text. An article with Article schema that explicitly names the author and links to their Person schema record gives an AI engine a high-confidence attribution. An article with a byline that says "by James Faxon" in plain text provides a weaker signal.

Where Your Author Page Should Live
The domain where your author page lives matters for AEO purposes. There are three viable options, each with different tradeoffs.
A personal domain, typically your name as a .com or a close variant, gives you maximum control and portability. You own the URL, the structure, and the content. The domain authority starts low if the domain is new, but builds over time as you publish consistently and accumulate inbound links from external sources.
A subdomain of your company domain, such as james.yourcompany.com or team.yourcompany.com/james, carries the authority of the parent domain from day one. If your company domain has strong authority, this is a fast way to give your author page credibility. The tradeoff is that the page is tied to the company, which creates complications if your role changes.
A dedicated publication domain, such as a Substack, Ghost, or owned blog with a custom domain, works well if you are actively publishing to it. The domain authority builds through your publishing activity rather than through the company association. This option works best for executives who are committed to a consistent publishing cadence.
For most executives, a personal domain combined with consistent external publication is the strongest long-term AEO strategy. The personal domain is permanent. It follows you across roles, companies, and career transitions. The external publications build the multi-domain attribution pattern that strengthens citation confidence.
The Publishing Archive: What to Include and How to Structure It
The publishing archive on your author page is the most directly useful element for AI engines. It is the evidence that your claimed expertise is backed by actual published content.
The archive should be structured so that each entry includes the article title, the publication it appeared in, the date it was published, and a link to the indexed URL. If you are publishing on your own domain, the archive links back to your own content. If you are publishing externally, the archive links out to the external indexed URLs.
Organize the archive in a way that reinforces your topical focus. If you publish on two or three related topics, grouping by topic rather than purely by date makes the expertise signal clearer to both human readers and crawlers.
Update the archive regularly. A stale archive with the most recent entry from 18 months ago signals to both humans and AI engines that your publishing activity has slowed or stopped. A consistently updated archive signals an active publishing record, which is one of the positive signals that AI engines use when deciding which sources to cite for current queries.
Maintenance and Ongoing Optimization
An executive author page is not a one-time build. It is an infrastructure asset that requires regular maintenance to remain effective.
The minimum maintenance cadence is quarterly. At each quarterly review, update the publishing archive with new content, check that all external links are still live and pointing to indexed content, verify that schema markup is rendering correctly using Google's Rich Results Test or a similar tool, and update the biography if your role or focus has shifted.
If you are actively publishing, update the archive with each new piece. A real-time publishing record is a stronger AEO signal than a periodically updated one.
